2016 Spring/Summer Internship

The Hague Institute for Global Justice is currently recruiting suitable candidates for its 2016 Spring/Summer Internship Program (11 January–8 July). 

1. Duties and Responsibilities 
Interns contribute approximately 38 hours per week to the Institute. 

Interns assist staff with the following tasks: 
Program and project related research activities; 
Drafting reports, policy briefs and other publications; 
Organizing expert meetings and providing support during events. 
2. Eligibility  
a. Applicants must be enrolled in a Master’s Program in public international law, international relations, political science, conflict studies, or other related discipline at the time of the internship; OR have recently graduated from such a Master’s program;

b. Applicants must be EU-citizens OR students or recent graduates from universities based in the European Economic Area (EEA) OR already possess the necessary authorization to live and work in the Netherlands;

c. Demonstrated commitment to the mission and objectives of The Hague Institute and a strong desire to work in the field of peace and justice; 

d. Excellent analytical and organizational skills; 

e. Excellent communication skills; 

f. Excellent knowledge of the English language and preferably one other official language of the UN. 

3. General Information 
The Hague Institute for Global Justice offers genuine supervision of interns, a dynamic and flexible work environment, and international and highly motivated staff. 

The Hague Institute offers interns a gross monthly stipend of €350 (pro rata) for the duration of their internship. Additional costs such as housing, travel, living expenses and medical insurance must be borne by the intern.

You may apply for more than one program.

The following documents should be included in your application package:
a. A resume, which includes the following details:
Your skype handle
Your current residential address 
Your cellphone number
b. A cover letter 

c. A brief writing sample (please read our FAQs for guidance)

d. Two letters of reference  

Please confirm that you are eligible to work in the Netherlands without restrictions. Note that documents written in a language other than English will not be considered. 

6. Selection Process / Interviews
Candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of their application. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed via Skype. The interview will take approximately 45 minutes and will be followed by a one-hour writing assignment, which will be provided to you via e-mail after the interview. The interviews will be held in mid-November.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to apply for the internship if I am not eligible to work in the Netherlands?
The Internship Program is only open to:
EU-citizens and students or recent graduates from universities based in the European Economic Area (EEA);
Non-EU citizens who are currently enrolled in an academic program who are required to complete an internship as part of their curriculum. Your education institute should provide you with a declaration stating that you are currently enrolled and that the internship forms a mandatory part of your academic program; 
Non-EU citizens who already possess the necessary authorization to live and work in the Netherlands.
Interns are responsible for organizing their social security.

Application procedure
What format should I use for my resume and cover letters?
We accept Adobe (.pdf) and Word (.doc and .docx) documents.
References and writing samples
Please provide your reference letters when submitting your application package.  As with resumes and cover letters, please submit writing samples and reference letters in either Word (.doc and .docx) or Adobe (.pdf) format. The writing sample should be no more than 1000 words and can be an excerpt of an academic paper.
Referees should indicate your last name in the subject-line of the email if they are submitting the reference letters to the Institute directly. 
Please note that only complete applications will be considered. Applications submitted after the deadline and supplementary materials will not be considered.

Selection Process
What is the selection procedure?
All complete applications submitted before the deadline will be considered and evaluated on their merits. Selected candidates will be interviewed via Skype.
Candidates who are invited for an interview will be notified of the outcome of their application via email.
Applicants will be assessed according to the following criteria: 
Eligibility; 
Relevant academic and professional experience;
Motivation for undertaking the internship;
If my application is unsuccessful, can I apply for the next internship cycle? 
Yes, you may reapply for future internship cycles, but your current application will not be kept on file.
Can the internship be of shorter duration than indicated in the vacancy announcement? 
No. Candidates must be available for the full duration of the internship (6 months). 
Will I receive assistance in finding appropriate accommodation in The Hague?
The Hague Institute can provide you with general advice on finding suitable accommodation but will not arrange this on your behalf. 
What stipend can I expect? 
Interns will receive a stipend of €350 (pro rata) per month  to cover basic living expenses. Lunch is also provided free of charge. Interns will be given a dedicated desk and computer access.
Note that obtaining a private Dutch health insurance is mandated by law. To EU-citizens; before coming to The Hague, request the E101 Form to temporarily cancel your domestic health insurance to avoid double costs. The basic rate for private Dutch health insurance is est. €95 per month.  
Will there be a call for another Internship?
Yes, the next internship cycle will be the 2016 Fall/ Winter Internship Program, which is scheduled to be published on our website by early-April 2016.
