2014 PhD Studentship in Energy Engineering at Cardiff University in UK

Cardiff University is inviting applications for a PhD studentship in energy engineering. This studentship is open to UK nationals and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements. This PhD will last for 3.5 years and is only available to students wishing to study full time. Studentship consists of full UK/EU tuition fees, as well as a doctoral stipend of £16,726, updated each year. The application deadline is 14th June 2014.
About Scholarship: The transmission network in the UK is being stretched due to an increasing demand for power transmission combined with the difficulty in consenting new lines. Series compensation of transmission lines is a widely-used method to improve the effective capacity of the transmission system, thus avoiding the need to build new lines in many parts of the network. However, series compensation of lines creates the risk of torsional oscillations between the electrical network and generators. These oscillations are referred to as sub-synchronous resonance (SSR) since they typically occur at sub-synchronous frequencies (<50 Hz). SSR, if left unattended, has been known to cause serious damage to generators.
Study: Studentship is awarded in the field of Energy Engineering. Project title: Damping of Sub-synchronous Resonance.
Course Level: Studentship is available for pursuing PhD research program at Cardiff University in UK.
Scholarship Provider: Siemens PLC

EU Nationals who do not meet the above residency requirement are eligible for a fees only award, provided that they have been ordinarily resident in the EU for at least 3 years prior to the start of their proposed programme of study.
-Academic criteria: Candidates should hold or expect to gain a first class degree or a good 2.1 and/or an appropriate Master’s level qualification (or their equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline. 2014-2015 Dylan Thomas Centenary Scholarships at Swansea University in UK

Swansea University is offering four writing scholarships for EU, UK and international students. Each scholarship is worth £3000 towards tuition fees. Scholarships are awarded to study either the MA Creative Writing or MA Welsh Writing in English programmes. Application should be submitted till 2nd June 2014 for 2014-2015 academic year.
About Scholarship: Swansea-born Dylan Thomas (1914-1953) – poet, short-story writer and pioneer of radio drama – was a rock-star of literature before rock-stars had been invented. His restlessly innovative writings were recognised worldwide in his own short lifetime, not least in his rumbustious reading tours of America, and he remains one of the most extraordinary and original writers of the twentieth century. Swansea and west Wales, where he wrote the greater part of his oeuvre, were crucial to his art, which benefited from the creative tension of growing up in a cultural borderland (between Welsh- and English-speaking Wales, rural and industrial) and from his kicking against the traces of the stifling, middle-class respectability of his ‘ugly, lovely’ hometown. His sensuous, iconoclastic, humorous writing, which took the literary world by storm in the mid-twentieth century, remains both challenging and popular, and will surely claim even more admirers as a result of the Swansea-centred but worldwide celebrations of his work that will be enjoyed in the centenary year of 2014.
