University of Glasgow offers PhD Scholarships
to support candidates of the highest calibre to support full-time
study, based at the University of Glasgow campuses, notwithstanding any
periods of study away from the campus. Each four-year scholarship will
cover maintenance grant costs at the research council recommended rates
(£13,726 in 2013-14). The Host College shall waive the Scholar’s tuition
fee in full whether this is at the Home/EU or International rate.
About Scholarship: The Scholarship is awarded to the candidate by the University of Glasgow. The University reserves the right to vary these terms and conditions as it deems appropriate. The University will not change the terms and conditions of the Scholarship without providing due notice to applicants, Scholars, Donors/partners (if appropriate) and staff. As stated in The University’s Strategic Plan 2010 (Glasgow 2020: A Global Vision) the University aspires to “encourage multi-disciplinary approaches by supporting and developing networks of researchers.” Furthermore, the University has pledged to “enhance our standing as a community of world-leading researchers by promoting excellence within disciplines and inter-disciplinary teams tackling global challenges – providing cultural enrichment and benefiting the economy.”

Eligibility: -The Scholarship award is offered to a candidate subject to the candidate meeting all the conditions required by the University for admission to study for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
-The Scholarship is intended to support candidates of the highest calibre and as such may be offered to residents of any country provided that the candidate has obtained leave to remain in the UK for the purposes of full-time study.
-It is recognised that a scholarship candidate might have been involved in the development of theproject proposal. Where a candidate has been involved, and the proposal is successful in receiving an allocation, the scholarship will be awarded to them, provided they meet the University’s required entrance standards.
-The Scholarship is to be awarded for PhD study only, and cannot be used to support a 1+3 model of training (i.e. the student may not register for a Masters degree and then upon completion, register for a PhD). A candidate should undertake any required research training during the first years of their PhD.
-The Scholarship is intended to support candidates who have not previously undertaken study at a doctoral level and as such cannot be awarded to a candidate already in possession of a Doctoral degree or equivalent.
-The Scholarship is intended to support full-time study, based at the University of Glasgow campuses, notwithstanding any periods of study away from the campus (research furth of Glasgow) as authorised by the host College.
-If the Scholar withdraws from study within 3 months of the Scholarship start date, project partners may re-advertise or seek to award the Scholarship to a reserve candidate, provided that they meet above eligibility requirements.
Scholarship Open for: International Students can apply for these scholarships.
Number of awards: The top 5 applications from each College will be considered by the final selection committee, chaired by the VP (R&E) and including senior representation from all Colleges.
Duration: The Scholarship is only valid for a maximum of four years (48 months). No additional funding will be awarded for continuation beyond this period.
Value: -Each four-year scholarship will cover maintenance grant costs at the research council recommended rates (£13,726 in 2013-14). The Host College shall waive the Scholar’s tuition fee in full whether this is at the Home/EU or International rate.
-Each Scholarship includes an annual consumables allowance to contribute towards costs of the project, Scholar travel and conference attendance. The allowance may vary between Scholarship cohorts depending on the number of Scholarships supported by the Scheme each year. The consumables budget is capped at £5300 per annum, and a case for consumables costs must be included in the application.
-Funds to cover each successful scholarship project will be allocated to the Host College for disbursement to the student via MyCampus. The consumables budget can be accessed by contacting the Host College Graduate School Office. See section 4.2 Post Award Financial Administration for further details.
Notification: Research Strategy and Innovation Office notifies college ranked applicants of outcome in February 2014.
