General Functions
IOM has been entrusted by the ACP Secretariat in Brussels with the task of establishing the ACP Migration Observatory, an initiative by the ACP Secretariat funded by the European Union, and with the financial support of Switzerland. The objective is to establish a network of research centres in the six ACP regions, namely West Africa, Central Africa, East Africa, Southern Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific, to provide policy-makers and the public at large with reliable and harmonized data and applied research on intra-regional migration flows and in particular on the migration and development nexus.

A Central Management Unit (CMU) has been set-up in Brussels that is responsible for the overall management and administration of the ACP Observatory on Migration.
Under the overall supervision of the Director of the ACP Observatory for Migration and the direct supervision of the Project Officer in Brussels, the successful candidate will be accountable and responsible to support the implementation of activities in both Brussels and the ACP pilot countries:
  •     Backstop the ACP Observatory Research and Capacity Building (CB) Plan and ensure the timely implementation of activities by following up with research teams/consultants on the finalization of the reports (content, planning and logistical support);
  •     Assist in the provision of feedback to research studies and assessment reports as well as copy editing and final proofreading prior to publication
  •     Support the drafting and editing of reports and correspondence;
  •     Support in the development of CB training kits;
  •     Conduct desktop research and other research related activities relevant to the African, Caribbean and Pacific regions;
  •     Continuously update the Compendium on existing research on ACP Member States, and audit ongoing projects by IOM and other international agencies in ACP Member States in the African, Caribbean and Pacific regions;
  •    Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience:
Education and experience:    
a) Bachelor’s or Master’s degree preferably in Political or Social Sciences, International Relations or Development Studies or relevant field is required; b) First experience or internship within the context of migration and/or development. Knowledge of one or more of the 6 ACP regions and data related issues an asset; c) Experience in research on migration and development is an asset; d) Good level of computer literacy, including web-based management systems and database applications.

Languages:
e) Fluency in spoken and written English and French required.

Note:
Vacancy is reserved for candidates who should undergo a practice placement in the framework of their studies, hold a scholarship or who are sponsored by governmental/non-governmental institutions. Post is subject to local recruitment. Duration of the internship is from a minimum of three to a maximum of six months, based on intern’s scholarship within the period September 2013 – June 2014.
