UN Advocacy Intern IRCT - International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims

Background
The International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) is currently recruiting an Intern for our Geneva Office. You will be part of the Legal and Advocacy Team and report to the Head of the IRCT Geneva Office. The Internship is for 5 months planned for August-December 2013. The position is based in Geneva, Switzerland.
The intern will work directly with the Head of the IRCT Geneva Liaison Office to implement IRCT’s strategy towards key UN human rights mechanisms addressing issues related to torture and ill-treatment including the Committee Against Torture, the Human Rights Council and its Universal Periodic Review. This work will mainly focus on supporting and facilitating direct engagement by IRCT member centres and promoting IRCT’s key thematic priorities with the various relevant mechanisms. The intern will coordinate and conduct background analysis on thematic issues and country situations in collaboration with IRCT members and participate in direct advocacy activities. Through the internship, the intern will gain first-hand experience with UN human rights advocacy and the functioning of some of the main UN human rights bodies. Furthermore, the intern will gain in depth knowledge of issues related to torture and ill-treatment.
 

Academic pre-requisites
Bachelor degree within a relevant field of study (law, political science, international relations, development, or similar). Ideally, the candidate will be pursuing or already have finalised a master degree and have a strong academic interest in human rights and especially torture and ill-treatment.
Conditions
  • This position requires a valid Swiss or EU work permit. Unfortunately, the IRCT will not be able to obtain one for you.
  • In connection with the internship, the IRCT will provide a lump sum fee of 350 EUR per month to partially cover accommodation expenses in Geneva.
  • For students in Geneva, a part time internship can be negotiated with the right candidate
