Internship at GMF

Summary:
The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) is a non-partisan American public policy and grant-making institution dedicated to promoting better understanding and cooperation between North America and Europe on transatlantic and global issues.
GMF’s Brussels office seeks an energetic, responsible, and detail-oriented Trainee to support two GMF programs: the Climate & Energy and the Mediterranean Policy Programs.
This is a full-time position.

The Trainee will provide support to GMF’s Climate & Energy Program on a variety of projects that seek to advance transatlantic leadership on scalable policy and business solutions to reduce the risks of climate change and achieve a low-carbon, secure, and affordable energy future, while conserving natural resources. S/he will also provide support for GMF’s Eastern Mediterranean Energy project, which falls under the Mediterranean Policy Program. The Eastern Mediterranean Energy project provides research, analysis, and convening on the political implications of the discovery of hydrocarbons in the Eastern Mediterranean and the opportunities to reduce political risks associated with the discoveries, and to promote regional cooperation.

This traineeship offers an ideal opportunity to acquire substantive professional and organizational experience for those interested in a career in public policy and foreign relations. S/he will benefit from exposure to GMF’s network, various policy actors, and high-level, large scale events.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

- Conduct research for GMF’s Climate & Energy and Mediterranean Policy Programs;
- Provide administrative support to members of staff and Fellows of both programs;
- Assist with coordinating of events;
- Compile weekly news and events round-up for the Climate & Energy Program and the Eastern Mediterranean Energy project;
- Maintain directory, database, and website;
- and Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

- Fluency in English is required, other languages a plus.
- Excellent writing and oral communications skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Background/interest in diplomacy, transatlantic relations, and climate and energy issues.
- Excellent analytical, writing skills and previous research experience.
- Be comfortable multi-tasking, and working independently and as part of a team.
- Ideal for recent graduate (i.e. Political Science, International Relations, European Studies) to gain some work experience.

Start and length of internship:

Preferred starting date: November 2012
Preferred length of traineeship: Until end April 2013; commitment full-time (38 hours a week)
Pay rate: 1000 Euro/monthly
